Of cancers affecting both men and women, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon and rectum) is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. Screening can find precancerous polyps—abnormal growths in the colon or rectum—so they can be removed before turning into cancer. Screening also helps find colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment often leads to a cure. If you are 50 years old or older, get screened now.
Often, there are no symptoms of colon cancer. That is why it is so important to get screened and know the warning signs. Phelps Memorial Health Center is offering a free home screening test that checks for hidden blood in the stool, a potential sign of colorectal cancer.
The home screening test kit includes detailed, easy to use instruction. Once completed in the privacy of your own home, the kits may be returned in the provided envelope. You will receive your results by mail.
If you have a history of colon cancer in your family, talk with your doctor about earlier and more frequent screening. Screening options include: home screening annually, a flexible sigmoidoscopy is recommended every 5 years and a colonoscopy every 10 years. A colonoscopy is still the most effective way to detect colon cancer.
