Take advantage of a proven program to reduce your risk of prediabetes.

Simple Solutions, a pre-diabetes program at Phelps Memorial Health Center, will begin January 16.

Phelps Memorial educates individuals to try to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.  Simple Solutions is a National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) recognized by the Centers for Disease Control.

According to recent reports from the CDC, 86 million Americans have prediabetes. That’s about 1 out of 3 adults. Generally, there are no symptoms associated with prediabetes, and 9 out of 10 do not know they have it. Prediabetes is when your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.  Prediabetes increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.  Becoming more active, eating healthy, and losing weight can cut one's risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half.

Jenny Spaulding, RN, CDCES, stated, “Our program, Simple Solutions, is all about preventing type 2 diabetes.” She added, “Small and simple lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your health.”

Through group sessions, program participants will work with trained Certified Lifestyle Coaches to learn how to make lasting healthier lifestyle changes.  Eighteen weekly sessions, will have topics including healthy eating, increasing activity, weight loss, core principles of tracking food and activity levels, stress management, coping with triggers, travel tips, and how to facilitate support for their healthy lifestyle.

“This course can help prevent diabetes and potentially other health conditions and is well worth the investment of time,” said Mrs. Spaulding.

Class size is limited.  Interested persons should call by Jan. 10.  Contact Lacey Becker, RD, CDCES, 308.995.2881, or Jenny Spaulding, RN, CDCES, for more information, 308.995.2848.
