It’s back to school time! Back-to-school time can cause anxiety and is normal and understandable. Many feel anxious about going back to school after a long summer break, switching schools, changing to a new teacher, beginning school for the first time and now handling post pandemic situations. Regardless of what the case may be, here are some tips and strategies to help ease the transition and get your child off to the right track this school year:
Stress and Anxiety – Be there for your children. Talk to them and listen to their concerns. Children may show their anxiety in different ways. You know your child best, so be on the lookout for changes in your child's behavior and mood, such as:
- Increased defiance or irritability
- Disturbances in sleep
- Loss of appetite
- Lack of concentration
- Less energy
- Physical symptoms like nausea, muscle tension or dizziness
- Refusal to go to school
- Sadness or crying
- New onset urinary/bowel incontinence or change in bowel habits
If your child is showing any of these signs, they may have anxiety about returning to school. At Phelps Medical Group, we are always here to help answer questions and help you navigate through any concerns you may have about your child or concerns for yourself in providing care for your child with anxiety.
